Thinking About Happiness

Richard Morley Myers

Have you ever thought about what makes for a happy life? Not many people give the question more than cursory attention. And if they do think about it, it's hard for them to get beyond the platitudes and prejudices of our time. This book draws on classics of Western philosophy to introduce young people to a variety of ways of thinking about how to prepare for a happy life.

While the Grade Six students at Falstaff Public School are exploring their aspirations for life, a unique opportunity suddenly emerges:  one of them will be chosen to serve as the city's 'Mayor for the Day.'  In the election campaign that ensues, several of the children learn important lessons about themselves -- and about other people.

FREINDSHIP COVER 150 pages 5x8 (1).jpg

Elizabeth Williams

What makes a friendship genuine and durable? When is a "friend" not really a friend?  Mrs. Henderson's Grade Six class gets a unique opportunity to learn about friendship when they are asked to put on a play about the relationship between Falstaff and the young Prince Hal.  Not only is the play itself instructive; mounting it puts some friendships to the test while allowing others to blossom.

COURAGE

Elizabeth Williams

What is true courage? How is it related to fear? How does it differ from daring? Mrs. Henderson organizes a field trip to Niagara Falls for her Grade Six students, one of whom is a little too fond of dares and pranks. The field trip provides an opportunity for everyone to learn what it means to be courageous.

Richard Myers

How do you make a meaningful life in a world of shallow consumerism and relativistic thinking? Richard Myers draws on philosophic and literary classics to explain the challenges we face and to explore a number of meaningful alternatives.  Myers' work is an adaptation of Thinking About Happiness for use as a textbook in a course at the University of Waterloo titled The Quest for Meaning in the Modern World.  General readers are encouraged to purchase Thinking About Happiness.
